Chris Millar's Intricate Mixed-Media Works Blend Painting and Sculpture

Canadian artist Chris Millar, known for his detailed mixed-media sculptures, has created two new works: "Loom Beneath the Loam" and "A Prize Every Time." "Loom Beneath the Loam" is a mixed-media wall piece featuring eight tiny paintings, two relief sculptures, and various sculptural elements on a brass frame, giving it a contraption-like appearance. In contrast, "A Prize Every Time" is a departure—a meticulously rendered acrylic painting containing about 90 portraits of notable figures from Alberta, the artist's home province, arranged on a map. The painting resembles a tourism map merged with a look-and-find book. Millar notes that while some Alberta-centric references may be lost on American audiences, the painting remains visually engaging. Recognizable figures include Michael J. Fox and Joni Mitchell, both born in Alberta.
