Chris Bowman's Abstract Practice Explores Landscape, Process, and Transformation

Artist Chris Bowman maintains a multidisciplinary practice centered on abstraction, process-driven experimentation, and the interplay between landscape and narrative. Working across drawing, photography, installation, sculpture, and time-based media, he creates environments where image and structure merge. His approach emphasizes material transformation, using oxidising compounds and physical engagement to produce works that evolve over time. Key works include C6_4827 (2019), an installation drawing created for the North Sydney Art Prize at the North Sydney Coal Loader, which employs paper, graphite, pigment, and rust compounds to investigate gesture and impermanence. Other notable pieces are Notation 5 (The Pool of Lethe) (2025), a photographic work, and The Awakening (2020), a drawing-photography triptyth reinterpreting the Orpheus myth. Bowman's artistic influences include Structuralism, Minimalism, and Land Art, with references to artists like Richard Serra, Paul Klee, and László Moholy-Nagy. He studied at Liverpool Art School and the Royal College of Art in London. His forthcoming project, Thresholds at the Edge of Time, continues his exploration of landscape as evolving topology. Bowman's work has been developed across locations including Australia, New Zealand, Scotland, Wales, Yorkshire, Indian Kashmir, and Norway.
