Chiura Obata: From Internment to Enduring Legacy

Chiura Obata (1885–1975) was a Japanese-born artist who immigrated to the US at 17, initially en route to Paris. He settled in San Francisco's Japantown, working as an illustrator and founding the first Japanese-American baseball team. A 1927 Yosemite trip produced over 100 works and shifted his career toward landscape painting. He joined the California School of Watercolor, blending Japanese ink techniques. By the 1930s, he exhibited widely and taught at UC Berkeley. During WWII, under the Alien Enemies Act, Obata was interned at Tanforan and later Topaz, Utah. Within days, he organized art schools and produced over 500 paintings. One work, Moonlight over Topaz, Utah, was gifted to Eleanor Roosevelt and hung in her bedroom until her death. After release, he taught at Berkeley until retirement. His work is held by the Whitney, SFMOMA, and Smithsonian. Yosemite's Obata Art Weekend, now in its fifth year, faces uncertainty due to federal budget cuts.
