Chinese Chipmakers' Localization Push Tests Semiconductor Equipment Reliability

During an industry conference held on Monday in Wuxi, eastern China, Jie Chen, the chairman of Britech Semiconductor Equipment (Shanghai) Corp, announced that numerous new wafer fabrication plants in the region are establishing specific localisation goals for their production equipment. One major client in Wuxi is targeting an 80 percent localisation rate for equipment at its latest fab. This strong emphasis on domestic sourcing increases the demands on Chinese manufacturers to produce dependable machines for high-volume wafer production. Chen warned that the semiconductor equipment industry needs to evolve from mere technical feasibility to commercial reliability, describing this evolution as a transition from a 'zero-to-one' stage to a '2.0 era.' He highlighted the importance of uniform performance across various machines, stating that while creating a single machine is straightforward, achieving identical performance across multiple units is a daunting task. Chen also remarked that the ultimate test for the industry will be when Chinese toolmakers can attract leading international clients without relying on local advantages. This event highlights the challenges facing China's ambition for semiconductor self-sufficiency.
