Chef Santiago Lastra to Open Frida Kahlo-Inspired Pop-Up at Tate Modern

exhibition · 2026-06-23

Chef Santiago Lastra will run a pop-up restaurant at Tate Modern from June 25, 2026, to January 3, 2027, coinciding with the exhibition "Frida: The Making of An Icon." The 36-year-old chef, who earned a Michelin star at his London restaurant KOL in 2022, will serve dishes using seasonal local ingredients with Mexican flavors like coconut, lime, and chili. Lastra, born in the same Mexico City district as Kahlo, Coyoacán, sees food as a way to elevate Mexican culture globally. He previously hosted a successful three-day pop-up at Tate Modern in 2017. His career was shaped by managing a Noma pop-up in Tulum, where he worked with 18 Indigenous villages. KOL's design, by studio A-nrd, evokes a Mexican house from the late 1970s-80s, with crockery from UK potters and a corn-husk panel by designer Fernando Laposse. Lastra aims to honor Kahlo's spirit as a host and her love for Indigenous Mexico.
