Château d'Oiron's Unique Contemporary Art Collection Blends Renaissance and Cabinet of Curiosities
The Renaissance Château d'Oiron, located in the Loire Valley, houses a modern art collection established in 1997 by curator Jean-Hubert Martin, featuring around sixty artists under the theme "Curios & Mirabilia." Among the prominent artists represented are Anne and Patrick Poirier, Gloria Friedmann, James Lee Byars, Daniel Spoerri, Christian Boltanski, and Thomas Grünfeld. Originally constructed in the 16th century for Claude Gouffier, the castle was designated a historic monument in 1923, acquired by the state in 1941, and underwent restoration in the 1990s. This summer, an exhibition showcasing punk photographs by Karen Knorr is scheduled from June 26 to November 1, 2026, alongside the addition of six new works from collector Antoine de Galbert in the Sword Tower.
