Charlotte Kingsnorth transforms discarded chairs into hybrid creatures in her central London studio. Her ongoing Hi!breed series, which began with a 2011 residency in Brompton, envelops salvaged midcentury frames in foam, mohair, and hand-stitched upholstery, creating furniture that blurs the line between object and organism. The Fuzzy Hi!breed series uses shaggy mohair coats, while the 2022 commission G Plan Fan Club for Objective Gallery gathers mismatched chairs around a lacewood table. Kingsnorth's process involves carving foam, hand-stitching skins, and allowing each found frame to dictate its mutation. The result is furniture that feels both affectionate and threatening, with polished wood bones peeking through padded flesh.
