Charline von Heyl's First Solo Exhibition in Brazil at auroras

Charline von Heyl, a German-born painter residing between New York and Marfa, Texas, is holding her first solo exhibition in Brazil at auroras, a project space in a modernist house in Morumbi, São Paulo. The exhibition runs until September 18, 2026, and features 14 recent works in acrylic on linen. Von Heyl, who studied painting in Hamburg and Düsseldorf and was part of the Cologne art scene in the 1980s, belongs to a generation that revived painting after conceptual experimentation. Her work employs allegorical methods of appropriation and montage, layering and fragmenting information to challenge painting's boundaries. The exhibition includes the series Sabotagerie (2026), which embodies a principle of sabotage by confiscating and subverting original meanings. Von Heyl has described herself as 'a-historical,' rejecting linear development, and her paintings allude to art historical canons and pop iconography, such as Picasso's tauromachy and Soviet graphic arts colors. Works like Bull TV (2000) and Stash (2026) reference Jasper Johns' Flags series. The show is organized in collaboration with Petzel Gallery, New York, and coincides with auroras' tenth anniversary, following exhibitions of Suzanne Jackson and preceding Jacqueline Humphries.
