Chantal Spit: Intimate Figurative Paintings from Snapshot to Canvas at NDSM Studio

Chantal Spit, born in Losser in 1971, has worked for seven years in a studio at the NDSM-werf in Amsterdam-Noord. Her paintings are figurative and realistic, often derived from her own photographs. A recent work, Horse-and-wagon ride (2026, oil on canvas, 136 x 232 cm), depicts a girl and a white horse drawing a carriage, based on a 2017 trip to Copenhagen with her then seven-year-old daughter, two years after her divorce. Spit studied at the AKI in Enschede from 1991, graduating in 1996, and attended the Rijksakademie in 2001, where Luc Tuymans and Rob van Koningsbruggen reviewed her work. She has had no fixed gallery for years and supports herself by teaching two days a week at the Hogeschool voor de Kunsten Utrecht. Her practice emphasizes the act of painting over the finished result, and she cites Munch and Van Gogh as influences. The article, written by Alex de Vries for Mister Motley, includes images of works such as Chickens (2019), Gegrond (2021), Next Move (2021), Hiatus (2026), and Emo (2026).
