Chang Yuchen's Interactive Book Installation Opens at MoMA's Creativity Lab

exhibition · 2026-10-19

Running through March 14, 2027, on the second floor of the Museum of Modern Art in New York, Creativity Lab: Art of the Book centers on an installation titled In a Dream We Entered a Book, developed with artist Chang Yuchen. The Paula and James Crown Creativity Lab hosts the project, which asks visitors to build dream worlds by placing images, symbols, and objects across a page rather than simply viewing finished works. Drawing prompts, bookmaking workshops, and a resource library of artists' books accompany the installation. MoMA's presentation draws explicit inspiration from its exhibition The Surrealist Book: Tomorrow Lives in Mirrors, linking the activity to Surrealism's exploration of the unconscious and unexpected juxtapositions. Public programs were developed with the Center for Book Arts, founded in 1974, and Dieu Donné, established in 1976, both specialist New York organizations working in book arts and handmade paper. Yuchen's interdisciplinary practice spans writing, drawing, teaching, and publishing; her ongoing Coral Dictionary project is a writing system based on coral debris that uses visual, associative, and emotive translation. The participatory format departs from the traditional gallery model, positioning visitors as makers whose results vary according to their own memories and choices.
