Chaewon Lee, an industrial designer and DJ, has developed TUNO, a ring-shaped DJ controller as part of the Samsung Design Membership program. This innovative device compresses two complete CDJ decks into a compact ring, comparable in size to a CD, allowing it to be held like a steering wheel. Lee analyzed three professional DJ sets using standard CDJ (RX-3) equipment, revealing that DJs' hand movements often follow symmetrical circular patterns, which inspired the ring's design. It features a spring-loaded button in place of a jog wheel, with a click wheel and scroll button for EQ adjustments. The system includes built-in wireless earbuds that activate when worn and a motion sensor to monitor head position for individual decks. Gesture controls enable track skipping and song recommendations through shaking. TUNO connects via Bluetooth to any music application and is designed for easy portability, resembling a sketchbook for musical concepts. A lighting UI offers beat feedback without needing a screen. Currently, the project is a concept, having undergone refinement through clay modeling and 3D scanning, and is not yet in mass production.
