Cezanne and Us at Grand Palais Traces Artist's Influence from Gauguin to Doig

exhibition · 2026-08-10

Opening at the Grand Palais in Paris from 23 September to 17 January 2027, "Cezanne and Us" marks the first significant showcase of Paul Cezanne's art since the 1995 exhibition at the Musée d'Orsay. This event is a collaboration between the Centre Pompidou, Musée d'Orsay, and Musée de l'Orangerie, presenting 70 works by Cezanne alongside 75 pieces from artists such as Picasso, Matisse, and Mondrian. Curator Jean-Rémi Touzet highlights Cezanne's impact on his peers, mentioning that Paul Gauguin acquired six of his paintings in the 1880s. The exhibition will explore themes of Modernism, Abstract Expressionism, and features two Sainte-Victoire paintings, while a prologue connects Cezanne's The Bather with Peter Doig's 2023 Bather.

Key facts

  • Cezanne and Us runs at the Grand Palais in Paris from 23 September to 17 January 2027.
  • It is the first major Paris exhibition of Cezanne's work since the 1995 Cezanne show at the Grand Palais.
  • The exhibition is organised by the Centre Pompidou, Musée d'Orsay and Musée de l'Orangerie, partly due to the Pompidou's five-year renovation closure.
  • It features 70 Cezanne works and 75 works by artists including Picasso, Matisse, Derain, Tillmans, Mitchell, Zao Wou-Ki, Adnan, Beckmann, Mondrian and Malevich.
  • Paul Gauguin bought six Cezanne paintings in the 1880s, and Émile Bernard wrote the first defending article in 1904 for the Occident journal.
  • The show includes two Sainte-Victoire paintings: Montagne Sainte-Victoire with Large Pine (1887) from the Courtauld Gallery and Mont Sainte-Victoire Seen from Les Lauves (1904-05) from the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art.
  • A prologue pairs the Museum of Modern Art's The Bather (around 1885) with Peter Doig's Bather (2023).
  • Curator Jean-Rémi Touzet notes that Vincent van Gogh thought of Cezanne involuntarily while working.
