Ceramicist Heidi Fahrenbacher on Doubling Prices and Anonymous Criticism

In episode 280 of The Art Biz podcast, ceramic artist Heidi Fahrenbacher opens up about an anonymous letter she received in 2021. The note cautioned her that raising prices would spell financial doom, signed off as "Sincerely, someone who cares." With encouragement from her business coach Megan Auman, she decided to nearly double her prices, eliminate her production line, and introduce a simpler collection. Fast forward two and a half years, she got a postcard, likely from the same sender, expressing discontent over her mug's $92 price tag. In 2023, facing dwindling wholesale sales, she shifted to direct sales, which currently account for 10 to 15 percent of her business. By fall 2025, she began managing her inventory like a retailer, focusing on bestsellers. Fahrenbacher, a 2002 graduate of Kalamazoo College, runs Bella Joy Pottery in Plainwell, Michigan, creating art inspired by vibrant contrasts in nature. She reflected on her past habit of overproducing to feel validated, realizing now that "doing less" can lead to better productivity and earnings.
