Celine Levitan's Stitched Paintings at Wyspiański Pavilion

The Wyspiański Pavilion in Kraków hosts 'The Language of Pearls', an exhibition of works by Celine Levitan (born Celina Kędziera, 1974), curated by Delfina Jałowik. Levitan, a graduate of the Jan Matejko Academy of Fine Arts in Krakow, creates stitched paintings using fabrics, embroidery, patchwork, sequins, faux pearls, and plastic stones. She defines these as paintings, emphasizing that the material allows layered representation unattainable in traditional painting. The works are created intuitively without sketches, with titles emerging after completion. Motifs include snakes, roosters, tongues, pearls, eyes, and female figures, forming an autobiographical visual language. The exhibition title references Jungian interpretation of pearls as symbols of transformation. A double-sided 'monidło' titled 'Woman's Puzzle / Dress-Up Doll' invites viewer interaction, inspired by paper dolls and retouched photographic portraits.
