CCCB Barcelona Hosts Seminar on Josep Lluís Sert's Legacy

The Centre de Cultura Contemporània de Barcelona (CCCB) is organizing a seminar dedicated to the work and thought of architect Josep Lluís Sert, scheduled for October 1-2, 2026. The event will feature experts, architects, and thinkers from various generations, structured into four thematic blocks: Sert and housing, Sert and the arts, Sert and the Americas, and Sert and Barcelona. Notable speakers include Sarah Whiting, Judit Carrera, Lluís Ortega, Moisés Puente, Emiliano López, Eduardo Prieto, Carolina B. García, Dolors Rodríguez Roig, Joan Busquets, Reto Geiser, Josep Maria Rovira, and Jaume Freixa. Sert, a key figure in modern architecture, was a founder of GATEPAC and a proponent of rationalist architecture in Catalonia. Forced into exile in the United States during the Spanish Civil War, he later served as dean of Harvard's Graduate School of Design. His international projects, particularly in Latin America, and his friendships with artists like Joan Miró and Pablo Picasso, shaped his influential career. A disciple of Le Corbusier, Sert's thinking evolved from European modernism to advocate for dense, compact cities and human-scale architecture with public purpose. His legacy remains relevant today, as seen in contemporary criticism and the heritage value of his built works. The seminar will take place at the CCCB's Mirador, with free attendance but prior reservation required.
