Catherine Goodman's Tapestry and Painting Exhibition at Boughton House

Catherine Goodman's exhibition 'In the House of Tapestries' at Boughton House features large-scale tapestries woven by Stevens Tapestry Studio near Johannesburg, South Africa, alongside her paintings. The tapestries, based on her oil paintings, were produced by a workshop of mostly women, many from families of weavers. Goodman traveled to South Africa to collaborate on color schemes. The exhibition includes 'Volterra Cabot,' a piece that evolved from a Tuscan landscape into a phoenix-like form, reflecting a theme of Phoenix, Fire, and Renewal. Goodman, a friend of the late Duchess who was a BBC producer and writer, began making sketches at the estate years ago. Boughton House, a private residence rarely open to the public, remains largely unaltered since its construction. The estate features tapestries depicting the four elements, a ceiling by Louis Chéron, and a collection including Roman sculptures and El Greco's 'Adoration of the Shepherds.' Goodman's works are intentionally large to immerse viewers, and she aims to reflect contemporary life, not just the estate. She continued painting through personal hardships, including her parents' deaths and her own cancer treatment, seeing art as a vessel for grief and hope. The exhibition runs at Boughton House in Kettering, United Kingdom, in 2026.
