Catherine Deneuve at 74: From 'Repulsion' to Yves Saint Laurent Muse
Catherine Deneuve, originally named Catherine Fabienne Dorléac, was born in Paris on 22 October 1943. She chose her mother Renée Deneuve's surname for her stage persona. At the age of thirteen, she made her acting debut in Le collegiali (1956). In 1962, Roger Vadim cast her in Il vizio e la virtù, and they welcomed a son, Christian Vadim. Deneuve gained acclaim for her roles in Roman Polanski's Repulsion (1965) and Luis Buñuel's Belle de Jour (1967). She was briefly married to David Bailey and had a notable romance with François Truffaut, with whom she starred in L'ultimo metrò, earning both the David di Donatello and César awards. Her controversial scene with Susan Sarandon in Miriam si sveglia a mezzanotte (1983) attracted significant attention. In 1992, she received an Oscar nomination for Indochine. Deneuve was also a muse for Yves Saint Laurent and served as a UNESCO Ambassador from 1994 to 2003.
