Cassette Tape-Style DV42 Toy Camera Launches on Makuake for $55

A new toy camera styled like a cassette tape, the DV42, is now available for pre-order on Japanese crowdfunding platform Makuake. The camera, created by IT Store, weighs just 24 grams and measures 53 x 36 x 17 millimeters. It features a 48-megapixel sensor for JPEG photos and records video in 2K resolution. The DV42 includes a 0.96-inch display, built-in filter effects, a rechargeable battery, and a microSD card slot. It comes in a variety of colors including translucent, pink, purple, green, yellow, silver, and black. The camera is priced at 8,600 yen (approximately $55) for early bird supporters, with shipping expected to begin in November. IT Store stated that the project aims to provide a compact camera for capturing everyday moments, travel memories, and time with friends. The company claims the camera can capture moments that smartphones cannot, a statement that PetaPixel disputes. PetaPixel's review criticizes the built-in battery, noting that such batteries deteriorate when left unused, leading to the camera eventually ending up in a landfill. The review also acknowledges that writing about such products contributes to the problem but hopes companies will design cameras with more consideration for longevity and environmental impact.
