Casa Tenjin: Machiya renovation by atelier yoo in Kyoto
Casa Tenjin, a traditional wooden machiya in Kyoto's Shimogyo district, has been renovated by atelier yoo. Originally built in the early Showa period and operated by hotel brand Keiyuugyo, the 113 m² project reinterprets the machiya spatial typology. The design team, Xiaodi Sun and Nianqu Leng, clarified the structural logic and reorganized spatial composition using a restrained architectural language. The renovation articulates functions, spaces, and living experience anew. Contracted by Smile Home with landscaping by Rokkaku Zouen, the project was completed in 2025. Photographs by Kazuoki Yasugi.
