Casa Skoura: Enekén Studio transforms Mérida home with desert tones and Mayan references

Enekén Studio has completed Casa Skoura, a 115 m² residence in Mérida, Yucatán, that repurposes the vestiges of an earlier structure. The project takes its color palette from the Skoura desert in Morocco, using orange chukum, pigmented concrete, and pasta mosaics. A doorway inspired by Mayan ruins leads to a courtyard shaded by an avocado tree. The living room is a conversation pit modeled on low Moroccan salons, with a gabled roof rising six to eight meters. Large windows frame the patio vegetation and allow views of rain. Original stone walls were preserved; one divides the living and dining areas, revealing the building's history. The kitchen island extends into a table connected to the terrace, with a sliding door for cross-ventilation. The terrace opens to an outdoor lounge and a rounded pool surrounded by lush plants. The rear volume contains two bedrooms, a half bath, and service areas; the ground-floor bedroom has a shower lit by a glass block wall, and an upper-level window shaped like an eye frames the sky. Materials include red cedar carpentry, pigmented concrete, chukum, and artisanal tiles. Fixed furniture, tables, and art pieces were produced under the MATA brand. Casa Skoura is featured in Glocal Design Magazine's 89th edition, 'Visionarias del espacio,' which highlights 15 women architects and interior designers in Mexico, with covers by Prince Láuder and Jimena Estíbaliz.
