Casa Katana: KRAK Architects Unveils Blade-Inspired Concept for Crete Coast
Konstantinos Stathopoulos of KRAK Architects has designed a 3D concept for a house on the Greek island of Crete that draws its form from a Katana, the curved sword of Japanese warrior tradition. The design, named Casa Katana, appears to slice through the Cretan landscape with a sharp, angular profile that contrasts with the rock overlooking the Aegean Sea. The project is conceived entirely in relation to its setting: the structure is embedded in the rock until it merges with the ground, and its aerodynamic shape was studied according to northwesterly wind currents. Light also shapes the scheme, with facade orientation studied to secure constant daylight, making the house a sustainable construction whose performance and design blend into the terrain. A mimetic effect is achieved by combining modern materials with local raw materials, producing a warm palette that contrasts with the liquid surface of a swimming pool cantilevered over the Cretan sea. The concept embraces the traditions of local dwellings, creating a house historically embedded in the landscape, which Stathopoulos describes as 'combining reason and dream.'
