Casa Gruta: Cenote-Inspired Architecture in Valladolid, Yucatán

Casa Gruta, designed by Salvador Román and Adela Mortera in the Sisal neighborhood of Valladolid, Yucatán, Mexico, recreates the physical experience of moving through a cenote. Completed in 2025, the 254 m² house uses compression and release as its organizing logic rather than literal imagery. The entrance sequence borrows from Maya ritual, with an álamo tree marking the threshold and an open-air vestibule with a water feature. The material palette is restrained: pigmented grayish-green concrete that shifts color with sunlight, natural cedar, and gold hardware. Interior design by Paulina Román and Andrés Briceño maintains the rhythm, with rooms that compress before expanding into open clearings. The master bedroom opens onto a courtyard with a cylindrical water feature beside a flamboyant tree. Landscape design by Archivo Vegetal and Paulina Román uses vegetation to script sightlines and shadow rather than as decoration. The architects described their approach as creating a living experience through a compelling narrative, constructing an atmosphere first. The project raises questions about borrowing the emotional register of a sacred natural site for a private residence.
