Carvalho Araújo to Convert Braga's Former Judicial Court into MUZEU Contemporary Art Center

architecture-design · 2026-10-20

The former Judicial Court of Braga is being transformed into MUZEU, a new venue for contemporary art and thought designed by the Portuguese studio Carvalho Araújo. José Manuel Carvalho Araújo serves as lead architect on the project, which covers 3,000 m² and is scheduled for completion in 2026. Rather than demolishing the existing structure, the design retains the courthouse's facades and incorporates a 14th-century medieval wall into the scheme. The interior is being reorganized around a newly built contemporary structure inserted within the historic envelope. NUDO produced the project photographs. The work falls under the cultural architecture and cultural center categories, and the project is located in Portugal. Susanna Moreira curated the presentation of the project.
