Carmen Lomas Garza's First Major Retrospective in 25 Years Opens at ASU Art Museum

Carmen Lomas Garza, a prominent figure born in 1948 in Kingsville, Texas, has dedicated more than fifty years to depicting Mexican American culture through her colorful art. Her first significant showcase since 2001, titled "Picturing the Familiar," is currently on display at the Arizona State University Art Museum, running until September 10, 2026. This retrospective features over 80 of Garza's pieces alongside 50 works from fellow artists such as Ester Hernandez and César A. Martínez. Curated by Alana Hernandez, the exhibition emphasizes Garza's influence within the Chicano art movement. Motivated by her mother, she chose to pursue art at the age of 13 and attended Texas College of Arts and Industries. Following its initial run, the exhibition will move to The Cheech Marin Center from October 3, 2026, to February 14, 2027, and then to the El Paso Museum of Art from October 9, 2027, to March 5, 2028.
