Carmen Laffón's 'Variaciones' Opens at Thyssen-Bornemisza

The Museo Nacional Thyssen-Bornemisza in Madrid presents 'Carmen Laffón. Variaciones', the first major monographic exhibition since the artist's death in 2021, curated by Paula Luengo. Running from June 23 to September 27, 2026, it focuses on Laffón's last two decades while including earlier works, marking her first retrospective since 1992 at the Museo Reina Sofía. The exhibition is structured into nine thematic sections, featuring series such as dolls and cradles, still lifes with wicker baskets and sewing machines, rooftop views of Madrid and Seville, landscapes of Doñana, and later series 'La cal' (2011-2015) and 'La sal' (2017-2020). It culminates with 'La viña', a charcoal drawing and bronze installation in the museum's hall. Laffón's work is characterized by serial creation, intimate atmospheres, and a palette of soft tones, with rare human figures. The exhibition also includes a 30-minute audiovisual profile. Key works include 'Bodegón del galletero' (1991-1992), 'Repisa improvisada' (2002-2003), and 'La sal' (2019) from the Reina Sofía collection.
