Carlos Hathcock: The White Feather Sniper of Vietnam

other · 2026-09-11

Carlos Hathcock, born in Little Rock, Arkansas, in 1942, became one of the most renowned American snipers of the Vietnam War. He enlisted in the Marines at 17 and quickly distinguished himself as an expert marksman, winning the 1,000-Yard National High-Power Rifle Championship at the 1965 Wimbledon Cup. That same year he became a Marine Corps Designated Sniper. Deployed to South Vietnam, he was initially assigned as a Military Policeman but was transferred to the 1st Marine Division Sniper Platoon by Captain Jim Land. Operating near Da Nang and Hill 55, Hathcock registered 93 confirmed kills, including a world-record 2,500-yard shot in 1967 using a .50 caliber machine gun with a scope. He wore a white feather in his bush hat, earning the nickname 'White Feather Sniper' from the North Vietnamese and Viet Cong, who placed a $30,000 bounty on him. His exploits included a duel with an enemy sniper known as 'The Cobra' and a controversial claim of killing a female platoon commander called 'Apache.' In 1969, Hathcock was severely wounded when his vehicle struck a mine; he rescued seven men and received a Silver Star in 1996. After the war, he helped establish the USMC Scout Sniper School in Quantico, Virginia, and was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 1975. He died in 1999 in Virginia Beach. His legacy endures in Marine sniper doctrine and training facilities named in his honor.
