Carlos Garaicoa's 'I giardini di Piranesi' at St. Regis Rome

Galleria Continua presents Carlos Garaicoa's solo exhibition 'I giardini di Piranesi' at the St. Regis Rome hotel, transforming the luxury venue into an imaginary city. The show features new drawings, watercolors, paintings, and a large installation 'Contrapeso (Ciudad Plomada)' made of metal weights and brass counterweights, evoking a city in precarious balance. Garaicoa, born in Havana in 1967, pays homage to Giovanni Battista Piranesi, the 18th-century engraver who conceived the city as a critical device. The exhibition includes oversized carnivorous and poisonous plants that dwarf decaying Havana buildings, inverting visual hierarchies and turning organic elements into aggressive forces. Garaicoa studied thermodynamics before painting at the Instituto Superior de Arte in Havana (1989-1994) and now lives between Havana and Madrid, where he co-founded an artist residency. His multidisciplinary practice—photography, sculpture, drawing, installation, video—investigates the social structure of cities through architecture.
