Carlo Mattioli Retrospective Opens at Ivrea's Museo Garda

The Museo Civico Pier Alessandro Garda in Ivrea, Italy, is hosting a retrospective of Carlo Mattioli, a refined 20th-century artist born in Modena in 1911 and based in Parma until his death in 1994. The exhibition, titled 'Carlo Mattioli. TEXTURES', runs until 27 September 2026 and is curated by Anna Zaniboni Mattioli (president of the artist's archive and his granddaughter), Marco Pozzali, Marcella Turchetti, and Martina Lunardi. It revisits Mattioli's career, which began in 1938, and includes portraits, religious subjects, still lifes, landscapes, and sculpted woods. The show highlights his connection with Olivetti, recalling a 1979 exhibition in the foyer of the Sala Cupola of the Olivetti Centro Congressi, organized by Giorgio Soavi, a writer and collector. Mattioli won the International Prize for Drawing at the 1956 Venice Biennale, with a jury chaired by Roberto Longhi. His work, influenced by Picasso and Caravaggio, evolved from recognizable subjects to more abstract compositions, emphasizing material and light. The exhibition also features a quote by poet René Char, selected by critic Marco Vallora, and includes works from various periods, such as 'Spiaggia d'estate' (1972), 'Nudo' (1974), and 'Aigues Mortes' (1980).
