Carlijn Kingma's Monumental Drawing on the Dutch Housing Crisis Debuts at Singer Laren

exhibition · 2026-06-15

For the first time, Carlijn Kingma's artwork titled 'De machinerie van de volkshuisvesting' (2025), which measures 113 by 150 centimeters, is showcased at Singer Laren, accompanied by satirical etchings related to the housing crisis. This piece illustrates the Dutch housing system as a complex machine, incorporating elements such as existing housing, new developments, banks, and political factors, with various stakeholders represented. The creation stemmed from two years of collaboration with Follow the Money, which also includes an animated video tour. Financial support was provided by Provincie Zuid-Holland, Triodos Bank, Metropoolregio Amsterdam, and the ministerie van Volkshuisvesting en Ruimtelijke Ordening. Born in 1991, Kingma dedicated around two thousand hours to this drawing while balancing her role as a mother in Zutphen. A graduate of TU Delft in architecture, she has previously worked on projects addressing social issues.
