Carla Edwards Transforms American Flags into Abstract Tapestries, Prepares for Art Basel Miami with Night Gallery
In her Flag Series, artist Carla Edwards critiques state protocols by deconstructing American flags. She reimagines these flags as intricate tapestries that draw from quilting traditions and forms anthropomorphic shapes using rope. Based in Brooklyn, NY, her creations will be showcased at Art Basel Miami in collaboration with Night Gallery. Originally from Illinois, Edwards holds an MFA in Sculpture from the Rhode Island School of Design. Her past exhibitions include venues such as the Studio Museum in Harlem and the Louisiana State University Museum of Art. Public artworks can be found at Socrates Sculpture Park and Lighthouse Works. A Whitney Independent Study Program fellow and Skowhegan alumna, her pieces are part of collections like the Institute of Contemporary Art and Crystal Bridges.
