Carl-Henning Pedersen and Else Alfelt Retrospective at Lübeck's Kunsthalle

The Kunsthalle Lübeck presents over 100 works by Danish artists Carl-Henning Pedersen (1913–2007) and Else Alfelt (1910–1974), a couple whose oeuvre spans four floors. The exhibition, titled 'Dimensionen der Freiheit' (Dimensions of Freedom), traces their journey from meeting at the art academy in Helsingør (Den Internationale Højskole) in the 1930s to their involvement with the avant-garde groups Helhesten and CoBrA. Alfelt and Pedersen considered themselves autodidacts, rejecting academic constraints. Pedersen was influenced by the 'Degenerate Art' exhibition and Paul Klee, while both were inspired by Marc Chagall. Alfelt's work evolved from stylized mountainscapes to colorful spirals and mosaics reminiscent of Ravenna. Pedersen later created bronze hybrid creatures. The exhibition includes a catalog edited by Maximilian Letze. Runs until October 25, 2026, at St. Annen-Museum, Lübeck.
