Carl Hansen & Søn Unveils Begonya Lamp by Øivind Slaatto at 3daysofdesign 2026

At 3daysofdesign 2026 in Copenhagen, Carl Hansen & Søn debuted Begonya, a sculptural pendant lamp by Øivind Slaatto, inside the exhibition “Balanced Principles” at the brand's flagship store. The lamp reinterprets natural logic through mathematical control and unpredictability, inspired by the ever-changing appearance of fire. Its elliptical shade uses a non-woven polyethylene dress resembling paper, hiding the light source and requiring 168 precise joints; assembly takes up to 7 hours. The aluminium skeleton is assembled without glue or screws. Slaatto, a Copenhagen-based designer, collaborated with Carl Hansen & Søn for the first time. The exhibition (June 10–12) also featured historical pieces: the Scimitar Chair (1963) by Fabricius & Kastholm, the Porcelight bone-china pendant (1982) by Erik Magnussen, and a new leather-upholstered Wishbone chair. The brand manufactures all products (except outdoor) in Denmark, mostly by hand, with a factory on Funen employing 500 people and an in-house academy. CEO Knud Erik Hansen emphasizes human craftsmanship as irreplaceable by machines. The lamp's name, spelled “Begonya” instead of “begonia,” symbolizes the fusion of nature and artificiality.
