Cannupa Hanska Luger's "American Traditional" Confronts the Buffalo Slaughter at Garth Greenan Gallery
At Garth Greenan Gallery, Cannupa Hanska Luger transitions from ceramics to utilizing wood, ink, and archival materials in "American Traditional." An abstract bison crafted from ironstone clay and sumi ink is showcased on a charred dining table from the 19th century, accompanied by buffalo skulls resting on antique axes. Hrag Vartanian of Hyperallergic describes this as Luger's "strongest work yet," linking it to the buffalo's extermination during Westward expansion and referencing an 1892 photograph of buffalo skulls at the Baltimore Museum of Art. In other developments, a life-sized gallium statue of Florida Governor Ron DeSantis melted in Tallahassee, and two statues of King Ramses II were discovered in Behbeit Al-Hagar. The University of Arkansas has begun accepting applications for tuition-free graduate programs for 2027–2028.
