CannonDesign's Concrete-Wave Braman Cancer Center Rises on Biscayne Bay

architecture-design · 2026-09-25

CannonDesign has finalized the construction of the Braman Comprehensive Cancer Center, spanning 220,000 square feet, for Mount Sinai in Miami Beach, featuring a design reminiscent of an art museum, as requested by donors Norman and Irma Braman. Previously, the firm constructed Mount Sinai's Skolnick Surgical Tower and Hildebrandt Emergency Center in 2019, which established robust facade standards. Elevated six feet above the seawall, the center is designed to mitigate flooding risks, although it restricts foreground views. The choice of concrete was driven by Miami's Art Deco influences and high salinity. An algorithm streamlined the panel designs from 700 to 70. The project aims for LEED Gold certification, with contributions from team members including Matt Barnard, Brassfield & Gorrie, and TLC Engineering.
