Candace Hill-Montgomery's 'A Bare Woman Mutters Nothing' Surveys Five Decades at Hollybush Gardens
From June 5 to July 18, Hollybush Gardens in London showcases 'Candace Hill-Montgomery: A Bare Woman Mutters Nothing,' which features 21 pieces created between 1971 and 2026. The exhibition comprises weavings, paintings, photographs, a quilt, and sculptures made from papier-mâché. Curator Amy Tobin participated in a discussion with Hill-Montgomery within the gallery. David Grundy highlights that the artist, now in her early eighties, engages in a poetic exploration without defined boundaries. Key pieces on display include 'Concept Doubles While Shorts on Circumstance Rumbles' (2026), 'Some Are Liars' (2024), and 'Pope L's T Raining Day' (2025). The exhibition delves into historical themes and human connections, with the weavings' gaps symbolizing a rejection of historical constraints. Coverage will be featured in the September 2026 issue of ArtReview.
