Cameroon's President Paul Biya Returns After 70-Day Absence

At 93 years old, Paul Biya, the longest-serving head of state globally, has returned to Cameroon following a two-month absence that fueled widespread concerns regarding his health and governance capabilities. Having ruled since 1982, Biya arrived in Yaoundé on Thursday afternoon after a stay in Geneva that began on June 7, which his office described as a 'short private stay.' Accompanied by first lady Chantal Biya, he waved to supporters from his vehicle en route to the presidential palace, where numerous ruling party members, some donning attire with his likeness, gathered to greet him. His health has often been a topic of speculation, particularly due to his frequent visits to Geneva. After his departure, the government denied claims of his declining health, asserting he was still active in his duties. His return, after over 70 days away, raises further questions about his leadership amid ongoing security and economic issues in Cameroon.
