Camera Austria Showcases Valérie Jouve's Photographic and Filmic Inquiry into Space and Power

exhibition · 2026-09-23

Valérie Jouve's photographic and filmic work examines how human subjects relate to the environments they occupy, spanning fauna, flora, open landscapes, and architectural and urban sites. Emerging in the 1990s, her practice draws on an anthropological sensitivity that places her within documentary photography traditions while questioning their conventions. Her images defy easy classification, functioning neither as conventional portraits nor as neutral urban studies. Instead, she constructs what she terms "figures"—composite forms that expose how bodies, gestures, and architectures, as well as trees, interact. Camera Austria is presenting her work under the title "The Outside Inside," an exhibition that interrogates space, power, and human presence.
