Calma Residence: Tropical Retreat in Nosara by Carazo Arquitectura

Carazo Arquitectura has designed Calma Residence in Nosara, Costa Rica, a house that redefines tropical luxury through restraint, biophilia, and architecture that breathes with the landscape. Located in Playa Guiones between Quebrada Pelada and Quebrada Esperanza, the project preserves mature trees as essential architectural elements. Instead of opening immediately to the surroundings, the house organizes inward: two private volumes flank a central garden void, allowing vegetation to penetrate the core. The design prioritizes intimacy with nature, using louvers and screens to filter equatorial sunlight and create shifting patterns. Cross-ventilation replaces mechanical cooling, making the house responsive to its environment. The structure combines exposed concrete slabs with black steel verticals, while wooden ceilings and teak stairs add tactile warmth. A singular roof unifies the volumes, maintaining a discreet silhouette. The project appears in Glocal Design Magazine's 89th edition, 'Visionarias del espacio,' which features 15 female architects and interior designers expanding the conversation on architecture, design, and interiorism in Mexico. The issue has two collector covers by Prince Láuder and Jimena Estíbaliz.
