Calibrite ColorChecker Celebrates 50 Years of Color Accuracy in Photography

The Calibrite ColorChecker, a staple in professional photography for color calibration, is marking its 50th anniversary. Originating from a 1976 paper titled "A Color-Rendition Chart" by Dr. Calvin McCamy, H. Marcus, and J. G. Davidson at Macbeth (then part of Kollmorgen), the chart was designed to provide a standard test object for color reproduction in photography, printing, and television. Its 24 patches, including skin tones and grayscale, were engineered to mimic how real objects shift under varying light, helping photographers achieve accurate color. Over the decades, the ColorChecker has evolved into various sizes (Nano, Mini, XL, Mega) and configurations, including the Digital SG with 140 swatches and a 14-step skintone chart. It has been used by photographers like Katrin Eismann and Alan Shapiro to ensure color fidelity in their work. The tool has also found applications in science and space, including use aboard the Chinese Tianhe space module in 2021.
