Byunggwon Na's ALIT Lamp: Ceramic, Wood, and Light in Quiet Composition

Seoul-based designer Byunggwon Na has unveiled ALIT, a lamp that explores the interplay between ceramic, wood, and illumination. The design features a slip-cast ceramic shade resting on a square wooden column, with the shade conceptually derived from a circular plane folded into four quadrants, creating four gently curved surfaces. Na likens the silhouette to a maple seed or petal. The shade is not permanently attached, allowing it to be lifted off and used independently as an object or tray, while the wooden base continues to function as a lamp. Na experiments with color by mixing pigments into the liquid slip, producing shades that are either translucent or opaque, altering how light is diffused. The project, located in Seoul, South Korea, emphasizes light as a material within the composition, shifting based on the shade used.
