Bugaboo and Aalto University unveil pram made from orange peel and egg cartons
The Dutch stroller manufacturer Bugaboo has collaborated with Aalto University in Finland to design a prototype pushchair made from biodegradable and bio-based materials. This innovative project, which utilizes waste orange peel for the canopy and recycled egg cartons for cushioning, was initiated during Dutch Design Week last year. Aalto students were responsible for the stroller's development, maintaining Bugaboo's signature black frame. Nikolai Kurochkin formulated a composite from sawdust and methyl cellulose for the back panel, while Alois Auer and Renata Khayrutdinova created a seat cover from plant-based leather. Additionally, Nooa Laisalmi produced foam from starch, and Elisabeth Baidoo developed stuffing from recycled fibre-foam. Serranur Zileli wove the canopy, and Julia Särkkä designed a biolace blanket. The prototype was crafted in Aalto's Chemarts lab, offering students valuable practical experience.
