Buckingham Palace Picture Gallery Reopens with 120 Masterworks

This Thursday, July 9, the Picture Gallery at Buckingham Palace is set to launch its biggest re-display in a generation, increasing its collection from 63 to 120 artworks. They've added stunning emerald-green silk damask wall hangings and improved the lighting, which took 875 hours to install. To recreate the 1840s layout from Queen Victoria’s time, curators used historical watercolours, photographs, inventories, and architectural plans. A standout feature is the display of Rubens's Self Portrait alongside his portrayal of Anthony Van Dyck, echoing their original exhibition at Whitehall Palace in the 1660s. The collection now includes Caravaggio's The Calling of Saints Peter and Andrew, Van Dyck's Christ Healing the Paralysed Man, five Rembrandts, Vermeer's Lady at the Virginals with a Gentleman, and a recent oil study of King Charles III by Jonathan Yeo. The gallery sees over 500,000 visitors annually, with tickets available via the Royal Collection Trust, including discounts.
