Bronze Melville Statue Unveiled in New Bedford, Massachusetts

A new bronze statue of Herman Melville, titled 'Melville and Jonah's Journey,' has been unveiled in New Bedford, Massachusetts, outside the Seamen's Bethel, the historic chapel that inspired the Whaleman's Chapel in 'Moby-Dick.' Created by artist Stefanie Rocknak, the sculpture depicts Melville emerging from swirling waves and three towering whale ribs, with windswept hair and clothing, evoking the transformative journey that shaped him as a writer. The imagery references the biblical story of Jonah, which plays a significant role in the novel, with the three whale ribs symbolizing Jonah's three days inside the whale and the three-day pursuit of the white whale. Melville attended services at the Seamen's Bethel before sailing from New Bedford on the whaling ship Acushnet in 1841 at age 21, experiences that later inspired 'Moby-Dick,' published in 1851. Rocknak, a self-taught sculptor whose work has been exhibited at the Smithsonian and Tampa Museum of Art, was selected from 41 submissions in 2025. The 7-foot-tall bronze figure stands on an 18-inch granite base and faces New Bedford Harbor. At the unveiling, Rocknak stated, 'New Bedford isn't simply a backdrop at the beginning of Moby-Dick. It is the threshold of the journey.' Rocknak previously created 'Poe Returning to Boston,' a bronze statue of Edgar Allan Poe installed in Boston's Poe Square in 2014, and was a finalist for the National Native American Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C., in 2018.
