British Fashion Council Launches Fashion Britain to Decentralise London Fashion Week
As London Fashion Week (LFW) concluded, the British Fashion Council (BFC) launched Fashion Britain, an initiative to support talent outside London. The BFC collaborated with LFW on pop-up events in England, Wales, and Scotland to demonstrate that the event is "bigger than London." Northern Ireland was excluded this year but will be included next year. A 2022 House of Commons report found that 51% of the creative industries' economic output was generated in London, though it noted clusters in cities like Manchester and Leeds. Charles Jeffrey, founder of Loverboy, supported the initiative, stating that amazing education exists outside London and that fabrics from Manchester can be cheaper. Birmingham City University graduate Imarnie Bennett showcased her project at Somerset House, noting Birmingham is gaining recognition. Fellow graduate Sean Pajarillo, 25, is hopeful about opportunities due to industry mergers. Natalie Potter, BFC network director, said Fashion Britain connects talent to infrastructure and opportunities, with events in London, Bristol, Manchester, Liverpool, Newcastle, Edinburgh, Dundee, and Cardiff. Designer Priya Ahluwalia, who showcased her archive at Westfield Stratford City, stressed the need to support travel to London. Jeffrey added that formal training isn't the only path; work ethic matters.
