Brickhouse Garden: Noucentista villa reborn with Passivhaus standards near Barcelona

A century-old villa in the foothills of the Sierra de Collserola, Barcelona, has been meticulously restored and renamed 'Brickhouse Garden' for its brick facade and expansive garden. The project, led by Calderón Folch Studio (architecture) with Verveine Landscape Architecture (landscaping) and interior designer Núria Navarro, integrates Passivhaus energy-efficiency criteria and bioconstruction techniques. The renovation preserves the original noucentista character while adapting spaces for contemporary living. A former garage was converted into a workshop, and a 19th-century tool shed was restored. The garden, redesigned as a climatic infrastructure, retains its historic structure and all existing vegetation, featuring Mediterranean plants, efficient water management, and a pool designed as a natural pond. Interiors use a restrained palette of earth tones, sand, and warm whites with natural materials like wood and stone. The project prioritizes spatial quality, connection to the landscape, and long-term sustainability.
