Brian Serway: Appalachian Folklore in Monochromatic Visions

Brian Serway, an artist born in southwest Virginia and based in Johnson City, Tennessee, transforms the landscapes and folklore of Southern Appalachia into atmospheric monochromatic illustrations. His work, characterized by rich blacks and soft gradients, blends wildlife, cryptids, and celestial imagery, reflecting his belief that all living things are made of starstuff. Serway's creative process is influenced by aphantasia, a condition preventing mental imagery, leading him to work from emotions and fragments rather than complete scenes. He uses water-soluble graphite and watercolor pencil to create depth through layering and tonal adjustments. Since becoming a full-time artist in 2017, Serway has exhibited across the US and internationally, with a long-standing relationship with Arch Enemy Arts. He also founded HollerHouse in Bristol, Virginia, a gallery dedicated to contemporary Appalachian artists, and coordinates the Tri Cities Nocturnal Art Market. His philosophy of 'Neo Appalachian art' honors regional traditions while embracing diverse interpretations. Serway's work has been shaped by family stories, including those of Mothman from his grandmother, and an unexplained light in a Virginia cornfield. He encourages ethical use of his imagery, asking for credit and compensation when used as tattoo inspiration.
