BRBB Architects Design Shin-Dae-Ri House for Elderly Couple in South Korean Mountains

Completed in 2023, the Shin-Dae-Ri house in Hoengseong-gun, South Korea, was designed by BRBB Architects for an elderly couple transitioning from Seoul to rural life. The 317-square-meter residence sits on a sloping site in Gangwon province, backing against a wooded hillside while facing a valley with a stream. Curated by Miwa Negoro, the project responds to the clients' desire for a peaceful existence immersed in nature, surrounded by layered mountain ranges. The architectural concept centers on creating a space where the couple can cultivate gardens, tend small fields, and experience seasonal changes as part of daily living. Photographer Seokgyu Hong documented the two-volume, gabled-roof structure that opens toward the landscape. Located in a small mountain village, the house provides direct engagement with the natural environment through its orientation and design. The project represents a deliberate lifestyle shift from urban to rural settings for its inhabitants.
