Bozar Mounts First Major Jean Brusselmans Retrospective Since 1980
Bozar in Brussels is staging the first major retrospective of Jean Brusselmans since 1980, running from 2 October 2026 to 31 January 2027. Roughly 120 works by the Brussels-born painter of Brabant landscapes will be shown in dialogue with pieces by Fernand Léger, Piet Mondrian and Rik Wouters. The son of a tailor and a seamstress, Brusselmans shared a studio with Wouters before settling in Dilbeek, where he painted his immediate surroundings: the fields of Brabant, his own house, and a still life featuring slices of smoked sausage. The exhibition also addresses the 1936 stage sets Brusselmans designed for Schoenberg's Erwartung at Bozar itself, which have since been lost; artist Kristof Santy has recreated them for the show. Admission is 20 €, with reduced tickets at 14 to 18 € and free entry for visitors under 18. Bozar, the Palais des Beaux-Arts, is located at Rue Ravenstein 23, 1000 Brussels, Belgium.
