Bouchra Khalili's 'How to Call a Ghost' at Malmö Konsthall

Malmö konsthall presents Bouchra Khalili's solo exhibition 'How to Call a Ghost', running through 2026. The French-Moroccan artist, based in Vienna and a PhD candidate at Malmö Art Academy, transforms the gallery into a series of four intimate Greek theater-like stages where video installations explore migration, dignity, and collective memory. Works include 'The Public Storyteller' (2024), a two-channel video installation featuring the fictional character Djellali Kamal, a 1974 presidential candidate based on a murdered 15-year-old Algerian, who challenged French authorities and became a symbol for migrant workers' struggles. 'The Public Scribe' (2025) depicts a scribe documenting lives for a fee, while 'The Typographer' (2019) shows hands assembling type. The exhibition, with subdued lighting, evokes ancient hospitality and the power of poetry to transcend borders. Khalili has previously shown at Venice Biennale, MoMA, and Louisiana Museum of Modern Art.
