Blue Dot Fever: High Ticket Prices Drive Concert Cancellations

Fans are diagnosing major musical acts with 'blue dot fever,' a term referencing the blue dots on Ticketmaster's website that indicate unsold seats. High ticket prices are making concertgoers more selective, leading to cancellations of shows or entire tours. Post Malone, Meghan Trainor, and the Pussycat Dolls have all cancelled dates recently; while some cited other reasons, fans attribute the trend to low sales. Ticket prices for the top 100 worldwide tours rose 37% between 2019 and 2025, according to Pollstar. Music publicist Eric Alper notes that post-pandemic eagerness has faded, and fans now prioritize necessities over concerts. Veronica Avila, a fan at Post Malone's Toronto show, said she can only afford one concert per year. Ticketmaster and resale sites like SeatGeek and StubHub report that overall demand is not declining, but fans are more discerning. Live Nation states that less than 1% of shows have been cancelled, calling it a normal touring year. Tour manager Jen Ochej worries that rising costs could make live music accessible only to the wealthy. Alper adds that artists may diversify revenue streams as touring becomes less lucrative.
